A Little About Me

I am one of the founding members of Eleanor Roosevelt Community Learning Center and am currently the Superintendent of the school. My interest in starting the charter began with my experiences homeschooling my two sons, Niko (1990) and Jesse (1993). I consider myself a life-long learner and find that the longer I live, the more I realize how much more there is to know. I am dedicated to doing all I can to make sure that parents have the freedom to make choices for their children.

My formal education includes Bachelor's degrees from Sonoma State University in Environmental Studies and in Psychology. I also earned my teaching credential at SSU and taught fifth grade in public school in Salinas, California and for Kings Canyon School District in Fresno County. I changed careers when Niko and Jesse came into my life and I spent many wonderful years experiencing motherhood full time. As they got older I went back to school and earned my Master's Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy at CSU Fresno. My experiences as a mother led me to do my master's project on the study of the neurobiological processes that underlie the bonds between a mother and her baby.

In addition to being a mom and working at the school, I am also an avid organic gardener and I love to read and travel. I am also an activist in the areas of social justice and protection of the environment. My husband I recently completed construction of a rammed earth home that is located in an intentional community. It is our hope to inspire others to consider alternative construction that is energy conserving. I continually strive to align my values with the activities of my daily life. "Do unto to others as you would have them do unto you" is the guiding principle of my life.

I am also currently a member of the board of directors of HSC, (the Homeschool Association of California), a statewide organization working to protect the rights of parents to freely homeschool their children. This is an organization worth supporting. For more information, check out their website at www.hsc.org.
