Reading / Language Arts

If you can give your son or daughter only one gift, let it be enthusiasm.”--Bruce Barton

I believe enthusiasm is necessary in life and especially in the homeschooling process. Learning new things is so much fun. I've found that the things in my life that made the biggest impression and had the longest lasting effect on my own learning were the things that were interesting, exciting and unique.

I have enjoyed working with children for many years. In college, I worked at a summer camp for kids one summer. The kids would come and spend a week in the outdoors at Yosemite National Park. It was there I decided to become a teacher.

I graduated from Pacific Union College in 1991 with a bachelor's degree in Liberal Studies and a teaching credential for multiple subjects. Several years later, I went back to school and earned my master's degree in reading/language arts with a reading specialist credential from Fresno Pacific University in 2000.

Joining Eleanor Roosevelt Community Learning Center in its first year of operation, I worked part-time for several years. This gave me the opportunity to spend time with my own children at home. It was also wonderful to be able to bring my kids to work with me in this family environment. In January of 2007, I became a full-time education coordinator.

My professional experience includes teaching at each grade level from 4th through 8th. Additionally, I have taught world history to sophomore high school students. After coming to Eleanor Roosevelt Charter School, I've had the opportunity to work with younger students as well.

Being a part of the learning community at this school has been a wonderful opportunity for me. I enjoy working with the students and families on this lifelong learning journey.

I'll leave you with a quote by the woman for whom our school is named.

Life was meant to be lived, and curiosity must be kept alive. One must never,
for whatever reason, turn his back on life.”
